#CelebrityScope12 (WcW) - 'Tiwa Savage'

(WcW) - Woman Crush Wednesday! - 'Tiwa Savage'.
Tiwatope Savage-Balogun (born 5 February 1980), better known by her stage name Tiwa Savage, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress. Tiwa Savage was born in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State. Her family relocated to London when she was 11 years old. While attending high school, she was a trombone player for her school's orchestra band. Savage had a healthy upbringing; she grew up in a multicultural setting due to her migration from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, and from the United Kingdom to the United States. After graduating with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Kent, Savage started working at The Royal Bank of Scotland. She did backup vocals for George Michael at the age of 16, and lent vocals to other musicians such as Mary J Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Boceli, and Ms. Dynamite, amongst others. Furthermore, she has performed on stage with Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Destiny’s Child, to name a few.
Savage enrolled at Berklee College of Music and graduated with a degree in professional music at the age of 27. While reminiscing about her experiences there, she said she was motivated by the drive and passion of the younger students. She also said she needed the school's atmosphere. Savage spoke briefly about the challenges musicians face during their transition from backup to lead, and said that artists face more scrutiny when their performances are mediocre. Her business background has helped her fully understand the scope of the Nigerian music industry. Savage spoke about her business background and said that her level of professionalism does not make her susceptible to deception.
In 2006, Savage participated in the UK edition of The X Factor and advanced to the final 24. While participating in the popular music competition franchise, she had difficulty dealing with the limelight. She said, "You have to always realize that people are watching. When I got the bad news that I wasn't getting through [to the final 12] it was a really painful time. But you still have to learn how to hold that until you get home. Because you don't want to just let everything out. People admire you and want to see that you're strong; they don't want to see you breaking down."
In 2009, Sony/ATV Music signed Savage to a music deal. The deal solidified her to write for Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia Barrino, Monica and Mya. She has received songwriting credits for her contribution to Monica's soul-tinged ballad "Catch Me". Moreover, her collaboration with Fantasia on the song "Collard Greens & Cornbread" earned the American recording artist a Grammy nomination in 2010. Savage wrote Jaicko's "Oh Yeah" featuring Snoop Dogg, and Kat Deluna's "Push Push" featuring Akon and David Guetta. In as much as she likes writing for other artists, she finds writing for herself more rewarding. Savage performed background vocals on Whitney Houston’s album I Look to You (2009).
In December 2011, she co-hosted the second season of Nigerian Idol alongside IllRymz. Moreover, she made her film debut with Joke Silva and Ireti Doyle in the stage adaptation of For Coloured Girls. Savage became the first African female artist to be associated with the Pepsi brand after signing an endorsement deal with them.
She currently has a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing Savage signed a recording contract with Mavin Records in 2012. She also signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation in June 2016, which she later confirmed via Instagram. She co-wrote the track "Collard Greens & Cornbread" off Fantasia Barrino's Grammy-nominated album, Back to Me. Savage was featured on Solar Plexus, a compilation album released by Mavin Records. Her debut studio album Once Upon a Time was released on 3 July 2013. It was supported by seven singles: "Kele Kele Love", "Love Me (3x)", "Without My Heart", "Ife Wa Gbona", "Folarin", "Olorun Mi" and "Eminado". Savage's second studio album R.E.D was released on 19 December 2015. It was supported by four singles: "My Darlin'", "African Waist" and "If I Start To Talk". Savage sings in English and Yoruba. As a singer, her achievements include an MTV Europe Music Award, MTV Africa Music Award, two The Headies Awards, one Channel O Music Award, one Nigeria Music Video Award, and two City People Entertainment Awards.

#CelebrityScope11 - 'Mr Eazi'

Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade (born 20 July 1991), better known by his stage name Mr Eazi, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He is the pioneer of Banku music, a fusion sound he describes as a mixture of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian chord progressions and patterns. Mr Eazi relocated to Kumasi in 2008 and enrolled at KNUST, where he began booking artists to perform at college parties. He showed interest in music after recording a guest verse on "My Life", a song that gained traction and became a popular record at KNUST. Mr Eazi released his debut mixtape, About to Blow, in July 2013. He gained an international audience following the release of the 2015 single "Skin Tight". His second mixtape, Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos, was released on 10 February 2017. In March 2018, several outlets reported that Mr Eazi signed a record deal with Diplo's label Mad Decent. Mr Eazi signed a licensing deal with Universal Africa, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group.

Mr Eazi was born in Port Harcourt, the capital and largest city in Rivers State, Nigeria. He grew up in an entrepreneurial home. His mother owned a small business and his father is a pilot. The latter parent established his own private aviation consulting practice. While attending primary school in Lagos, Mr Eazi had a brief stint in the school's choir. During his upbringing, he listened to records his dad would play for the family while they ate breakfast. At age 16, Mr Eazi relocated to Ghana to further his educational endeavors. He enrolled at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and studied mechanical engineering. Mr Eazi started recording music during his time at KNUST. He contributed guest vocals to the track "My Life", a song that gained traction and became a popular record at KNUST. Prior to that, he established a party and promotion company called Swagger Entertainment. He used this platform to book shows and promote events on the campus of KNUST. When he was 23 years old, he returned to Nigeria and opened his own e-commerce platform. Mr Eazi told The Guardian newspaper he briefly worked for Schlumberger when he returned to Nigeria. He also told the aforementioned newspaper his business ventures included soft drinks import, gold mining, and food distribution. Moreover, he told Highsnobiety he started about six business ventures. In 2014, Mr Eazi quit being a club promoter after an artist failed to show up for the largest party he attempted to throw.

Mr Eazi is known for pioneering Banku music, a sound "characterized by percolating rhythms and laid-back vocal delivered in Ghanian Pidgin English". Mr Eazi's music largely fits into the category of Afrobeats, a contemporary West African pop genre that marries global pop, highlife, and hip-hop. Mr Eazi's music has been described as having an R&B-like quality reminiscent of artists such as Beres Hammond and regory Isaacs. Lawrence Burney from Noisey.com stated that Mr Eazi uses his deep voice to "give ballad-like qualities to dance-forward production".

#CelebrityScope10 (WcW) - 'Asa'

Aṣa was born in Paris to Nigerian parents who were working and studying cinematography in France. Her family returned to live in Nigeria when she was two. Aṣa grew up in Lagos city, in the south-western part of Nigeria, and 18 years later, returned to Paris, where her life as an artist took off.

Aṣa's music influences grew over the years from the collection of great music her father had built up for his work as a cinematographer. These records featuring American, Nigerian and African soul classics, included musical greats such as Marvin Gaye, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, King Sunny Ade, Diana Ross, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, etc. Asa went on to draw inspiration from them.
In 2004 Aṣa met her manager and friend, Janet Nwose, who introduced her to Cobhmas Emmanuel Asuquo, who in turn became the producer of her first studio album Asa (Asha).
Asa returned to France at the age of 20 to study at the IMFP school of Jazz music, where she was told by teachers that she should go ahead and become a recording artist because she was ready and needed no schooling. Back in Nigeria, her first single, "Eyé Adaba," was beginning to get airplay. Aṣa soon signed to Naïve Records. Partnered with Cobhmas, and with the new involvement of Christophe Dupouy and Benjamin Constant, she produced her first platinum selling self-titled album, Aṣa. The release of the album saw Aṣa charting radios across Europe, Asia and Africa and went on win the prestigious French Constantin Award in 2008, where she was voted best fresh talent of 10 singers or groups by a jury of 19 music-industry specialists in Paris.
Her second album, Beautiful Imperfection in collaboration with a french composer Nicolas Mollard, was released on 25 October 2010, went platinum in 2011. The lead single from Beautiful Imperfection is titled "Be My Man" was released in late September 2010.
Asa's third studio album, Bed of Stone, was released in August 2014. The lead singles are "Dead Again", "Eyo", "Satan Be Gone" and "The One That Never Comes". She went on a world tour from 2015 to 2017.

#TopGists3 - 'South By South West (SXSW) Festival 2019'

This year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) is going to be da bomb!!!
(From Friday March 8thSunday March 17th 2019)
What is South by Southwest?
South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, music festivals, conferences and more held annually in Austin Texas U.S.A. It began in 1987, and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year! In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with SXSW interactive lasting for five days, music for seven days and film running concurrently for nine days. Comedy and gaming components to the festival are particularly fast-growing. SXSW is run by the company SXSW, LLC which organizes conferences, trade shows, festivals, and other events.
Where is Music found in this colourful event?
SXSW Music is the largest music festival of its kind in the world, with more than 2,000 acts and above in most seasons. SXSW Music offers artist-provided music and video samples of featured artists at each festival via their official YouTube channel. The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to over 28,000 registrants in 2019! SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events have grown every year, most recently bringing over 51,000 registrants from all the world (and Africa) to Austin every March.

What about Film?

SXSW Film Conference spans five days of conference panels and sessions, and welcomes filmmakers of all levels. Programming consists of keynote speakers, panels, workshops, mentor sessions and more, with expert filmmakers and industry leaders. Although the film festival often highlights independently produced films and emerging directing talent with unique visions, the festival has long served studios as a starting point for their comedies, using enthusiastic fans as a barometer of how they might play in wide release. The SXSW Film Festival runs nine days, simultaneously with the SXSW Film Conference, and celebrates raw innovation and emerging talent both behind and in front of the camera. Festival programming categories include: Special Events, Headliners, Narrative Spotlight, Documentary Spotlight, Narrative Competition, Documentary Competition, Visions, Midnighters, 24 Beats Per Second, SXGlobal, Episodic, Festival Favorites and Short Film Programs. The SXSW Film Awards, which occur on the last day of the Film Conference, honor films selected by the Feature and Short Film Juries.
What Nigerian Artistes are performing in this year’s SXSW 2019?
While SXSW is home to a lot of incredible activities, the music segments are definitely its biggest draw. Just last year, Mr Eazi, Runtown, Maleek Berry and Moelogo headlined the Sounds From Africa segment; and the year before that was Davido, Iyanya and Tekno.
This year 2019, PatorankingAdekunle Gold, Not3cs and LAX will be the Nigerian artists headlining the Sounds From Africa segment — which, since last year, is now merged with the Sounds From The Carribean segment. They also will be joined by Ghanaian stars, Kojo Funds and AKA. While Seyi Shay won't be part of the Sounds From Africa segment, she will be performing alongside the likes of Wyclef Jean at the Highland Lounge. Other artists of Nigerian descents billed to perform include Fat Tony, Kalu & The Electric Joint, Jim-E-O, Wunmi, Kelvyn Colt and Amanze..
