What is a Record Label?

If you follow music trends and artists, you would have already come across the term Record label severally. You can probably name a few if I ask you to. But a Record label isn’t merely a group of musicians or a group that musicians belong to.

A record label is a company that records, distributes and promotes music. Getting signed into a record label used to be synonymous with ‘making it’ as an artist. This is because the Record label is a business that will do what needs to be done to sell your music. After all, they need to make money from your music. They have invested and need to get returns.

However, this is a traditional view of Record labels as their role in the music industry has since evolved. The era of music streaming has all the more sponsored this evolution of the role of Record labels. Today, you can launch your musical career with your song reaching every corner of the world via digital distribution platforms.

But even today, getting signed to a Record label guarantees a higher chance of having a successful musical career. They have the money and the means to promote you. But it doesn't end there, they also have the name and the reputation to sell you. Some Record labels have considerable listeners' loyalty. People have come to trust that as far as it is from this record label then it must be a good sound.

Some notable Record labels in Nigeria include Mavin Records, Chocolate city Records, YBNL Nation, Star boy entertainment, DMW.

Record labels used to be all for those who are strictly interested in the business aspect of music. However, successful artists have learnt to leverage their fame and success to start their Record label. This trend was further driven by the exploitation of artists by greedy Record labels.

With music streaming, there is a growing number of artists who prefer to stay without a record label. Some artists even decide to stand on their own after being with a record label. Whichever it is for you, Epoh Music is a platform for you to share your music and connect with your audience. Of course, you do that with or without a Record label.

The artist account has features that you can take advantage of to help more people discover your music. You can manage your content on the platform from your artist account. And you can sell your music or make it available for free download.

Five Musical Terms You Should Know

If you love music so much, you better be able to answer a few questions about it. And I’m not referring to questions like what is your favourite song? Or what is the hottest song of the moment?

I mean questions on Music itself.

Music is a field of human endeavour. It is a field of academic pursuit. Music is more than a good voice and an ear for sound. There are people whose passion for music has driven them to study everything there is to know about music. There are also some whose love for music has driven them to be masters of some elements of music. Then there are the rest of us who just want to listen to good music, dance to it, and enjoy life. If you belong to this category, it wouldn’t hurt to learn the basics, would it? So here are a few musical terms you should know.

Pitch: the position of a sound in the complete range of sounds. It is how high or low a note sounds when played.

Key: is a group or pitches or notes which guides music composition.

Adlib: is the part of a song that a singer sings on varying notes and tempos for a stylistic effect on the song. So the next time you hear a sweet “ohhh yesss” in a song, that’s an Adlib.

Unison: when two or more musical parts sing at the same pitch. The idea is for the different voices to sound like one.

Harmony: when two or more musical parts are sung or played simultaneously. The parts sing at a different pitch but at the same time to produce a single sound. When listening to a song, you'll notice there are voices singing the song differently but complementing each other.

These are things you will encounter in most songs. The good part is the next time you do, you know what exactly is going on and what it is called.

Love-filled Valentine

There is no set time for love. Love can happen at any time and in the strangest places. All year we feel loved, we fall in love again, we grow in love, or perhaps we give up on love.

However, the Valentine season reminds us to pause from the everyday task of surviving the world around us and celebrate the love we feel, the people we love and create memories we will cherish for life.

At Epoh Music, we know that no celebration is complete without music. And this is what fuels our commitment to bringing you your favourite songs in the moments that matter.

As you journey through love and life this year, we hope you find your favourite songs in the moments that matter.

Happy Valentine’s day!

The Love Playlist

It’s that time of the year when relationship people come together to oppress single people (sorry o, single people). But is romantic love all there is to Valentine? The Valentine season is actually a time for us to come together to celebrate all forms of love. We celebrate the people we love, and we allow them to celebrate us too. And, of course, no celebration is complete without music. Music and love go hand in hand, so a great way to spend this period is to spend it listening to music and allow it to remind us of the people we love and the moments with them.
