Alté - the music you didn't know you needed

The name of the genre already suggests non-conformity. However, Alte is not a new sound, it is a mix of R&B, Pop, and Afro-Fusion. To the fans of Alte, it goes beyond music, it is a culture. It is the Gen Z culture. It is breaking away to create something that truly defines you.

Derived from the word Alternative, Alte is used to characterise sounds that exist as a subform and unique blend of the predominant sound. The point is there is no standard definition for Alte. Alte is what you call it. Alte is what you make it. Alte is a step away from whatever is considered the norm.

With this definition, we are tempted to say all genres started as Alte. But Alte is not merely the evolution of sound as it interacts with various cultures. Alte is a music genre and culture born of the desire of a generation who do not identify with the norm and rebel against it to create something that suits them.

Notable Nigerian artists of this genre are Tems, Odunsi the Engine, Lady Donli, Wavy The Creator, Black Beatz, and Cruel Santino. If you are looking to understand this sound more, here are a few Alte songs you should listen to.

Everything You Heard is True -Odunsi The engine

Suzie's Funeral -Santi

Enjoy your life -Lady Donli

For the love of woman and country -Oma Mahmud

P.S. Thank You for Waiting -Wavy The Creator

BT4W -Tome

For Broken Ears -Tems

Alte is unconventional but pleasing to the ears. If you have not been listening to or following this genre, you most likely won't know who or what to search for. But we have fixed that for you. The Alte category on the homepage suggests new and trending Alte songs from the masters of this genre.

Tems Making Nigeria Proud All The Way!

Someone commenting on the Grammy win said Tems did not pass through the “upcoming artist” phase at all. While one might be quick to agree considering her growing international recognition, the truth is she put in the work to get to where she is today. And she deserves her flowers.

One thing that is particularly clear in Tems is that she is Talent, Brain, plus Hard work. Her songs have remained a favourite of many. And they have bagged her well-deserved accolades too.

Last year she won the BET Awards Best International Act, was nominated alongside Wizkid for a Grammy and featured on the soundtrack of Wakanda Forever. I can say on her behalf that the vision is clear!

At the 65th Annual Grammy which was held last weekend in Los Angeles, Tems made us proud by bringing a Grammy home for the song, Wait For U, by Future featuring her and Drake. There is no doubt that Tems will continue to break the glass ceiling in the music scene internationally, and we are excited for what is to come from here.

At Epoh Music, we say a big congratulations to Tems, and Burna Boy, who was also nominated. Keep making us proud guys!

Here is a good idea, how about listening to some good sounds from Tems in the spirit of the win? -start here

Wizkid and Davido Tour -something good to start the year!

I never really understood the reason for the rivalry, but it is public knowledge that Wizkid and Davido fans are always at loggerheads for one reason or another. The streets of Twitter have been the primary victim of this fan rivalry for years. It is either about who has the most hit songs or gets the most awards that year. There was even a time it was about who had helped more upcoming artists rise to fame. But this has largely remained a fan-base rivalry and has never really translated into an actual fight between the two stars. At least, there is no such fight that we know of.

However, Wizkid shocked everyone when he announced on Instagram that he and Davido would be going on a tour. Since the passing of his son, Davido has not held any show and has rarely been seen in public asides from the World Cup final. If this tour takes place within the coming weeks, it would be his first public show appearance since the tragic incident.

We here at Epoh Music are really looking forward to this collabo tour, and we are sending Davio love and light as he continues to heal through this period.

Let us remember that these artists are humans, give them space to live their lives, have moments to themselves, and don't set them up for unhealthy comparisons.

Love and Light!

Starting your Year with Positive Music and Vibes

Do you still remember your new year's resolutions?

It’s been only 13 days into the year, so we are still excited and looking forward to what the year holds. Starting your year on a positive note is really important as it goes a long way to contribute to a great year. However, some people spend all the days of January restarting their year every eke market day because they have done something they said they would not do in their new year resolutions.

One of the ways to start your year on the right note is to have a growth mindset. With things, you will continue to put in the effort even if the results are not showing yet. You have only failed when you stop growing.

Here at Epoh Music, growth for us means creating a better experience for listeners, promoting Nigerian music to a global audience and giving artists a platform to be rewarded for their creativity. The question is, what does growth mean for you this year? It is not too late to define it.

To contribute to your great start this year, here is a playlist of positive songs about the new year for you. Listen, enjoy, and fill the atmosphere around you with positivity.

By the way, your new year's resolutions should not only be about things you want to stop. Let it also be about things you want to build, start, and become.

Have a great year!
