BNXN blasts Fat Joe over name-change claims
Nigerian singer BNXN has fired back at American rapper Fat Joe following resurfaced comments suggesting he was responsible for the artist’s decision to drop the name Buju.
The controversy gained traction after a recent episode of the “Joe and Jada” podcast, where Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton appeared as a guest.
During the conversation, Fat Joe recounted how he allegedly “dissed” BNXN on television and claimed he “shut down a fake guy in Africa” who was trying to use Buju Banton’s name.
The remarks quickly sparked backlash online, with many Nigerians criticising the tone of the comments and dismissing the claim as inaccurate.
BNXN did not hold back in his response, taking to social media to directly address the rapper.
“The hate in your heart and your misinformation about African music and its artists is why your chromosomes are all f**ked up. Educate yourself, bozo,” he wrote.
Fellow Nigerian star Joeboy also weighed in, mocking the remarks and describing them as “dirty yarns,” while pushing back against what he and others see as a pattern of dismissive narratives about African artists.
Contrary to Fat Joe’s claims, BNXN’s rebrand in 2022 was linked to trademark concerns surrounding the similarity between his former stage name, Buju, and that of Buju Banton.
The singer, born Daniel Benson, clarified at the time that the change was a professional decision to avoid legal complications, not a reaction to any public criticism.
The podcast episode stirred further debate after Fat Joe also suggested that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica, a statement that drew widespread criticism from fans and industry observers who pointed to the genre’s roots in West Africa.
