My primary concern has always been never running out of good music to listen to all day. And thankfully, this is Nigeria, where there is no shortage of musical talent. The music industry has been giving us some good stuff this year, and I applaud every artist who has been a part of that record.
However, I have been seeing many artists releasing EPs and promising that an Album is coming. And I’m like, which one is EP again o? And since both contain songs, what is the difference?
EP stands for extended play, also known as extended play record. It is a musical release that contains about 4-6 tracks and has a playing/running time of under 30 minutes. An Ep is just in between a Single and Album. An Ep can also contain bonus tracks like an alternative version of one of the tracks or a demo. But these are not considered as part of 4-6 tracks that make an EP.
Most of us understand a single to be one track? Right? Well, it turns out we are slightly wrong. A single is a musical release containing 1-3 tracks of about 10 minutes each or less. Each track is a separate song and can have a different title. But this release is too short to be considered an EP or an album. Therefore the songs are collectively called a single.
An Album, on the other hand, is a musical release containing a minimum of seven tracks. It is also known as an LP long-playing, but nobody calls it that anymore. Kindly do not go to the market saying you want to buy an LP…(laughs). An Album usually contains over 30 minutes of music, and all tracks are by the same artist. Although, the artist can feature other artists on some of the tracks too.
These classifications have their roots in Vinyl records. Back then, EPs are released to promote the Album. It gives a few tracks for people to taste and know what to expect in the Album.
