Rema celebrates 'HEIS' anniversary |
Nigerian superstar Rema has finally pulled back the curtain on the true essence of his 2024 album HEIS, offering fans what he calls an “Author’s note” via X (formerly Twitter).
The Calm Down hitmaker revealed that the project is deeply spiritual and symbolic, far beyond surface-level interpretations.
“I was born in a Dragon year… HEIS needed to happen in 2024,” he wrote, hinting that the album’s timing was no coincidence.
Rema explained that the album was shaped by themes of ego death, spiritual awakening, and ancestral rage.
He referenced his album and single cover art as containing hidden symbols, burning teddy bears, glowing pineal glands, mushrooms, and more, all signifying transformation, pain, and rebirth.
His landmark O2 Arena performance also carried weight.
“I came out signifying the strength of a woman warrior, Queen Idia,” he said, reflecting on performing in the city where the stolen artifact of her head resides.
Calling HEIS his most personal work yet, Rema said, “No award or international gratification could fill up this gap for me… I walked with this album musically, physically, psychologically and spiritually.”
He added that HEIS wasn’t made for mainstream success, but for his “core Ravers.”
Despite limited rollout, no merch or vinyl, the album filled out every venue.
“Did I crack a matrix code?” he asked.
In closing, Rema affirmed: “HEIS did everything I wanted it to do.”
"True Ravers did play their roles while I walked this path, it cut through deep beyond music , y’all even pulled up to the shows on ALL BLACK outfits, leather boots & raged with me. Thanks to the peters, the John’s , the Thomas’s & the Judas who betrayed the course. You were all part of this story, Now I know," he concluded.
