How to Build Your Brand as a DJ in Nigeria

10 things to know before you venture into DJing

In the pulsating world of Nigerian music, DJs are the unseen architects of unforgettable nights, the orchestrators of our most cherished musical memories. Yet, it’s not enough to simply spin tracks in an industry where talent meets relentless competition.

To thrive as a DJ, you must master the art of building a brand—a unique identity that resonates with audiences and sets you apart from the crowd.

Here’s a roadmap to help you craft a compelling DJ brand:

1. Discover Your Unique Sound

Your sound is your signature. Whether it’s Afrobeat fusion, Amapiano grooves, or hip-hop remixes, define the style that speaks to your audience and represents who you are. Experiment, but stay authentic. Consistency in your sound helps fans identify you, even before they hear your name.

2. Invest in Your Skills

Your brand’s foundation lies in your craft. Take time to refine your mixing, scratching, and beat-matching skills. Consider enrolling in DJ academies or taking online courses to stay updated on trends and techniques. The more versatile you are, the better equipped you’ll be to meet diverse audience expectations.

3. Create a Memorable Identity

Your stage name, logo, and overall aesthetic should be as striking as your music. Choose a name that’s easy to remember and aligns with your persona. Design a logo that’s visually appealing and works across platforms. Your branding materials should tell your story at a glance.

4. Leverage Social Media and Content

Social media platforms are your virtual stage. Share your mixes, live sets, and behind-the-scenes moments. Engage with your followers through polls, Q&A sessions, and trending challenges. Create content that showcases your expertise, like tutorials or playlist recommendations. Consistent posting helps you stay on your audience’s radar.

5. Network Within the Industry

The Nigerian music scene thrives on collaboration. Attend industry events, join DJ associations, and connect with artists, promoters, and fellow DJs. Networking isn’t just about getting gigs; it’s about creating relationships that can propel your brand forward.

6. Be Professional and Reliable

Your reputation is your currency. Arrive at gigs on time, maintain good relationships with event organizers, and always deliver your best performance. Word of mouth is a powerful tool in the Nigerian music industry, and professionalism ensures it works in your favor.

7. Stay Updated on Industry Trends

The music landscape is dynamic. Stay ahead by keeping tabs on trending genres, popular tracks, and emerging technology. Incorporating fresh sounds and innovative techniques into your sets can make you a trendsetter, not a follower.

8. Collaborate and Innovate

Collaboration can amplify your reach. Partner with artists to produce tracks or perform live sets. Innovation, like integrating live instruments or unique visuals during performances, can make your shows unforgettable.

9. Engage with Your Community

Your audience is your biggest asset. Respond to comments, make requests, and appreciate their support. Hosting giveaways or organizing meet-and-greets can deepen your connection with your fans, transforming them into loyal ambassadors of your brand.

10. Utilize DJ Platforms

Platforms like Epoh Music offer tools to book gigs, connect with event organizers, and showcase your talent. Registering on epoh.ng can increase your visibility and credibility, especially as more stakeholders in the industry turn to digital solutions.

Final Thoughts

Building a brand as a DJ is a journey of persistence, creativity, and adaptability. It requires not just spinning tracks but weaving a narrative that captivates and inspires. As the Nigerian music industry continues to evolve, the stage is set for DJs who are ready to step up, stand out, and shape the soundtracks of our lives. The question is: Are you ready to take the spotlight?

Mr Eazi - 'Nothing like streaming farming in Nigeria'

Mr Eazi addresses streaming farming allegations in Nigeria

Nigerian music star and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has responded to allegations of "stream farming" in the country’s music industry.

The controversy was reignited when a tweet called for Apple Music to investigate streams coming from Nigeria, claiming that many were artificially generated.

The tweet read, “DEAR @APPLEMUSIC, YOU REALLY NEED TO INVESTIGATE THE STREAMS COMING FROM NIGERIA. THERE IS A LOT OF STREAMS FARMING CURRENTLY GOING ON!”

In a swift reply, Mr Eazi dismissed the allegations, tweeting: “There is nothing like streaming farming in Nigeria Please! No need for investigations we are a vibrant music consuming people hence the numbers you see!”

The concept of stream farming involves artificially inflating streaming numbers on music platforms to create the illusion of popularity.

While it has been a topic of debate globally, some critics allege that it is rampant in Nigeria, with even prominent artists suspected of engaging in the practice.

Mr Eazi, however, attributed the impressive streaming numbers in Nigeria to the genuine enthusiasm of the country’s music fans.

The Changing Face of Music Promotion: Are Veteran Nigerian Artists Struggling to Keep Up?

2Baba and D’banj thrive in the music game despite being veteran artists

The Nigerian music industry is experiencing a transformative era, where digital platforms and viral trends dominate. With Afrobeat cementing its global footprint, younger artists are leveraging innovative promotional tools to achieve rapid success.

This shift has left many wondering: are veteran musicians keeping up, or are they being edged out of the spotlight?

Social Media: A New Frontier

Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) have redefined music promotion. Viral dance challenges and influencer campaigns now dictate a song's success.

Emerging artists, often digitally savvy, thrive in this environment, harnessing these platforms to amplify their reach.

While veteran artists like 2Baba and D’banj remain influential, others struggle to adapt to the fast-paced demands of modern promotion.

For some, established fanbases and legacy hits ensure longevity, but the challenge lies in connecting with Gen Z audiences who consume music differently.

Reinvention vs. Resistance

The question of adaptability becomes critical. Artists like Olamide and P-Square have shown that reinvention—whether through collaborations with younger stars or adopting contemporary promotional strategies—can bridge generational gaps.

However, those resistant to these changes risk fading into obscurity in a highly competitive landscape.

The Future of Veteran Artists

As the music industry continues to evolve, the ability to embrace change will determine an artist’s relevance. For veterans, balancing their legacy with the demands of a digitally-driven world may hold the key to sustained success.

What’s your take? Are Nigerian veteran artists adapting to the new music promotion era, or are they being left behind? Share your thoughts!

'Olamide did not help me' - Portable

Portable denies Olamide's role in his career breakthrough, sparks debate

Nigerian music artist Portable has criticized the popular notion that Olamide played a pivotal role in bringing his career into the limelight.

Two years ago, the controversial artist collaborated with Olamide and Poco Lee on his breakout hit, Zazoo Zehh.

In a recent TikTok Live session, Portable denied receiving significant help from the legendary rapper.

While he acknowledged Olamide's contribution to the single, he confidently claimed the track had already gained traction before the rapper's involvement.

Despite attempts by other TikTokers in the live chat to correct his assertions, Portable remained steadfast, questioning how he should credit artists like Skepta, who have also collaborated with him.

Portable expressed pride in his musical achievements, as the hit track featuring Olamide has amassed millions of streams across various platforms.

However, social media users reacted with mixed opinions to his remarks. Many criticized Portable, labeling him ungrateful.

"This guy is really an ingrate. He’s someone you can never help and expect recognition for it. That’s why many big artists avoid associating with him. Who was he before Olamide gave him those verses? An ungrateful person will always be ungrateful," a tweep commented.

Meanwhile, a few others endorsed Portable's statements, sparking further debate online.

Timaya - 'You need a lot of money to promote music'

Timaya opens up about skyrocketing costs in the music industry

Nigerian singer Timaya recently shed light on the growing financial challenges artists face in the music industry today.

In a candid interview, the artist reflected on the Nigerian economy and how it's affected the cost of promoting music.

"Currently, you need a lot of money to promote music. Before, we didn’t even bother about shooting music videos. Even if we were shooting a video, it cost just N1.5 million," Timaya explained, highlighting the relatively low production costs artists used to enjoy.

However, the music landscape has changed dramatically. Now, producing a single music video can cost between N50 million and N100 million.

"Just to shoot one video: 100 million, 50 million, 60 million. And when you shoot the video, to promote it, you need more millions," he emphasized, pointing out that promotion requires as much investment as production itself.

This financial burden is impacting artists’ booking fees as well.

Timaya noted, "That’s why booking fees for artists now are expensive," revealing that the high cost of creating and promoting content has led to a rise in performance rates.

As the music industry becomes more competitive, Timaya's comments shed light on the financial pressures that artists must navigate to stay relevant in today’s fast-paced entertainment world.

Reclaiming Afrobeat: It's Our Sound, Our Story

Tyla's recent win at the MTV VMAs sparks massive controversy

In a surprising twist at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, South African singer Tyla walked away with the Best Afrobeat Award.

While we celebrate her achievement and the growing international reach of Afrobeat, this moment has sparked an important conversation about ownership, recognition, and authenticity in the Afrobeat genre.

Why, in a category named after a genre born in Nigeria, were none of our homegrown Afrobeat stars honored? What does it mean when international platforms start defining a sound that grew from the streets of Lagos?

This moment highlights a broader issue—Afrobeat is being claimed, shaped, and celebrated on the global stage, but the heart and soul of the genre remain rooted in Nigeria.

As the creators of this vibrant sound, we must reclaim the narrative and ensure that Afrobeat continues to flourish on its own terms. This is where the role of indigenous platforms becomes not only necessary but critical.

Afrobeat: More Than Just a Genre

Afrobeat isn’t just music; it’s a cultural movement. From Fela Kuti’s politically charged rhythms to the modern sounds of Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, Afrobeat reflects the heartbeat of Nigerian society.

It tells stories of resilience, joy, and struggle, all while pushing musical boundaries. Yet, as international platforms continue to shine a spotlight on the genre, there’s a risk of watering down its essence.

While it's thrilling to see Afrobeat gaining international acclaim, there’s a danger when platforms that don’t fully understand the genre attempt to define it.

This is why Nigerian artists need a platform that truly gets Afrobeat—a platform that knows where it comes from and can foster its future without compromising its identity.

An Indigenous Platform for Afrobeat

This is where our indigenous Nigerian music streaming app comes in. We’re more than just a platform; we’re the home of Afrobeat.

Unlike global platforms that lump Afrobeat into broad categories or filter it through foreign perspectives, we understand its roots, its evolution, and the diverse voices that make it powerful.

Our app - Epoh Music, is designed to amplify the voices of Nigerian Afrobeat artists, both established and emerging. We believe in showcasing the full spectrum of Afrobeat, from its raw, unfiltered beats to its most polished hits.

This is the place where Afrobeat can thrive without being forced to fit into boxes created by outsiders.

Keeping Afrobeat True to Its Roots

When Tyla won the Best Afrobeat Award, it wasn’t just a win for her—it was a win for African music’s growing influence worldwide. But it also reminded us that, as Nigerians, we cannot allow our sound to be defined by others.

Afrobeat is ours, and it’s up to us to preserve its authenticity, its soul, and its future.

By supporting an indigenous music platform like ours, you’re not just streaming music; you’re taking a stand for Afrobeat’s identity.

You’re ensuring that Nigerian artists continue to control the narrative, and you’re helping Afrobeat stay true to its roots.

The Call to Action: Join the Movement

We invite you to join the movement in reclaiming Afrobeat. Stream Nigerian, support Nigerian, and stay connected to the source of the music that has taken the world by storm.

Our platform gives you the power to not only enjoy Afrobeat but to help define its future. Let’s celebrate the global success of Afrobeat without letting it slip away from its origins.

Whenever our artists are nominated at the global level, do well to massively vote them to win- No be by mouth.

The future of Afrobeat belongs to Nigeria, and it starts with us. Reclaim Afrobeat today—it’s our sound, our story!

"We have disappointed and failed the fans," P-Square's Peter says to Paul

Peter Okoye replies Paul 'Rude Boy' accusations

Peter Okoye of P-Square has written an open letter to his twin brother Paul Okoye, following the reported split between them.

A few years after reuniting as a musical duo, the twins parted ways again; the news was confirmed by their elder brother, Jude Okoye.

In the open letter which was released this Monday, Peter condemns how Paul, also known as Rude Boy goes about to discredit his effort as a musician.

Read the full letter below:

Just like I have told you several times, I am not in any competition with you or anybody else. However, seeing you grant countless interviews where you constantly discredit my efforts in the group that we both created and built together really speaks volumes. In your recent interviews, you claimed that you wrote and sang 99% of all P-SQUARE songs and discredited me by saying that our song with TI "EjeaJo," which I wrote, was a failure. You went as far as using the YouTube views to discredit me once again.

You never acknowledged the other songs like "Get-Squared," "Bizzy Body," "Personally," "Roll It," "Temptation," "Alingo," "More than a Friend," "Shekini," "Say Your Love," "Gimme Dat," "Senorita," "IGBEdu," and a few others. Were these songs also considered failures as well?

Every time I have spoken in interviews about P-SQUARE, I have always used "we" and "us" because I saw us as a team. But whenever you speak, it’s always "I" and "me," even when I’m standing right beside you. It’s as if I never existed.

My brother, neither of us is the most talented artist in the world, but you fail to understand that God gave us this talent and even granted us another chance to excel after our last breakup. Instead, you chose to turn the most awarded and decorated music group in Africa into a laughingstock again.

One thing you need to understand clearly is that the fans didn’t fall in love with P-SQUARE because of who sang or danced the most. What made us special was the magic that came from our combined effort - us two! P-SQUARE was a force, and the fans fell in love with P-SQUARE because of our uniqueness and unity. We both have talent, no doubt, and I have often praised you in our interviews for your songwriting ability. I have also praised anyone who has ever written a song for us or even for me as Mr. P. But instead of showing gratitude for my kind words, you seem to find satisfaction in rubbing it in my face, forgetting that it is by God’s grace that we have come this far.

Rather than joining forces with me to reclaim our number 1 spot in the music industry, you chose to team up with Jude to claim the number 1 spot in the P-SQUARE group, always looking for opportunities to marginalize and humiliate me.

You are always claiming to be P-SQUARE’s songwriter, composer, producer, singer, backup vocalist, in fact you are everything including P-SQUARE’s video director, band, promoter, manager, even the choreographer. You are the Author and Finisher of P-SQUARE! In fact, I dash you 100% of everything instead of the 99% you claim.

I blame myself for not responding to your tweet claims in April 2015 that you wrote and sang all of P-SQUARE’s songs. I didn’t respond to these false claims for the sake of peace, as advised by family and friends, and now I am paying dearly for it.

So, my brother, let me ask you: Is Rudeboy or Mr P bigger and more successful than P-SQUARE today? Are we individually selling out arenas and stadiums like P-SQUARE used to? Are we topping world music charts with our songs as solo artistes?

Do we command crowds and entertain massive audiences like P-SQUARE?

I often find myself wondering, what do you truly gain by constantly disrespecting and belittling me all the time. You have disrespected my wife, disrespected my family, disrespected my talent, disrespected my ideas, and even sided with Jude when he was clearly trying to oppress me. Now, it feels like you have taken it even further by trying so hard to turn the fans against me by making them believe I’m jealous of you.

You have been doing everything for the fans to hate me, but guess what? They will never hate me; instead, they will hate us both because we have disappointed and failed them.

I hope you are happy now. I genuinely wish you nothing but the best, bro! As for those who believe these lies and false narratives and come to my page to drop negative comments, I understand because you have been fed the wrong narrative for a long time.

PSquare part ways again

Psquare have separated
Famous Nigerian musical duo, PSquare have gone their separate ways again.
Years after reuniting, the duo is said to have split, and this was confirmed by one of the twins, Rudeboy.
“There’s a lot people don’t know, and that’s why I always tell people, mind the people you bring close, especially people that were never there when you were somewhere."
He said, “The plan of our coming back together was going to produce a lot of hit albums. But as it is now, I’m just focusing on Rudeboy. Trust me, it is not everything that I would want to say,” he said.
“I was accused of saying that he (Peter) was the dancer, while I’m the singer. I know that, whenever we go to the airport, people ask are you a singer or a dancer? I didn’t know it was touching him. But I know there was a time we came together and said, ‘Don’t allow this thing get to you, you should be proud of what you’re doing. That’s the role you’re playing.’
“We have a song we did with T.I, ‘Eja Jo’. That was when the issue started. Till today, that song is still on three million views 15 years after, because people didn’t hear the PSquare’s voice that they are used to.
“When we came back together, because I didn’t want the issues that happened before, I told my brother to show himself, let us be involved in the creative process together. I told him we should share who carries the tracks equally but still, it wasn’t working.
“The new PSquare was peaceful. I needed the past mistakes not to repeat themselves. But then, again, he (Peter) said he’s no more doing (no longer interested). In fact, he told me in the face that he wants to quit. I asked if we could make it public and he refused. But what will happen when I go solo? People will call me the bad person. That’s why I’m speaking up now," he said.
